Lymphatic Drainage Massage in Oakland CA

What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

This type of manual therapy is a really gentle way to decrease swelling post surgery (top surgery or otherwise) or post injury. This is the only massage type that we offer as a stand-alone service since it is so specialized and requires ample treatment time.

Lymphatic drainage massage aka manual lymphatic drainage, is used to help the body return excess or stagnating fluid back to the heart. Swelling and inflammation is a normal part of the post-surgical or post-injury process, but when there is too much of it for too long, it can result in pain, tightness, or tenderness.

The lymphatic system is the channels and ducts in the body that collect and return fluid to the heart. When there is excess or stagnating fluid in the body, that shows up as swelling. We see this after injuries and surgeries typically, and if we don’t do any lymph drainage work to clear that fluid, the swelling can linger longer than it needs to, resulting in ongoing swelling, tightness, and pain.

A note from Dr. Baird:

“Since I had a bit of time on my hands during my own top surgery recovery, I took some continuing education classes to learn more about manual lymphatic drainage massage and now I am certified in it and excited to offer lymphatic drainage massage in Oakland. It’s also a modality that is accessible for most people to perform at home, so during a session, I can share with you some techniques you can do at home to further the work we do on the table. I’ve been doing a lot of this technique on myself and it’s been super helpful to reduce swelling and congestion, as well as incredibly relaxing due to the rhythmic nature of the technique.”

How Lymphatic Drainage Massage Supports Top Surgery Recovery

Other types of bodywork are helpful for restoring shoulder and chest mobility in the weeks to months following top surgery, but lymphatic drainage is ideal for within the first few weeks of healing (essentially as soon as you are feeling up to driving or arranging a ride to the appointment and walking up the stairs – sorry old building). It’s super gentle and I have supports and bolsters available to facilitate you being in a comfortable position for this service. It’s also fine to book this session if you are still wearing your post-surgical compression vest or binder. You won’t need to remove it for the session.
